My first meal

Today I left my apartment to buy groceries at 10 and came home at 6 when the sun was setting. I never knew shopping could be such an adventure. I wandered down Reforma in the morning when it is shut down to cars, and in the place of honking maniacs were swarms of families and teenagers riding bikes, skateboarding, rollerblading (must get a pair!) and walking along the 4-lane street. I walked down until I ran into the building with Diego Rivera's mural. I could only comprehend the far left section of the thing, so I decided I would just have to return to view the rest.

Then I found myself sitting in a small theater filled with children and their parents. The lights in the house went down, and over my left shoulder a woman's opera voice came booming down the aisle. I turned around and saw La Katrina in drag. What followed was a 45-minute play of Spanish banter between La Katrina and una bruja vieja. Everyone but me laughed, so I assumed it was good stuff. Onward, I finally found the produce market which is behind the artist market. I tried my best to buy confidently, but my knowledge of food vocabulary is pathetic. Next I found a Korean market and bought some Asian staples. But back in my apartment I realized I had no tools to cook any of my carefully chosen goods. So back out again, I finally found my dream supermercado.

After all that I just wanted to eat and watch an episode of Mad Men, so I just threw something together fast. I underestimated the power of Siracha sauce, which is the weird red stuff you see. The salad actually has tons of yummy vegetables under the lettuce. I think I'll keep posting my meals to encourage me to start cooking. It's not something that comes as a natural passion to me, so I get proud when I actually do it. Now I'm headed to bed. Tomorrow is my first day of work at my new job. Should be interesting. Yawn. Beddy-bye.
