Hooray for San Francisco!

San Francisco has become the first major U.S. city to pass a law that cracks down on the popular practice of giving away free toys with unhealthy restaurant meals for children.

If you're going to sell a toy in a meal, it better have:
-Less than 600 calories
-One fruit
-One vegetable

My first reaction: fascists. After a little more thought, this law could only really apply to huge chains, like McDonalds... so... their non-compliance would be easy to prove, thus not costing the city too much money to apply the law, and also permitting smaller restaurants to compete with healthier food.
Great stuff, but... is it really the role of the city government to control what children eat?

You bring up what has been the major contention. It's always a question of when and to what extent our government should intervene. Unfortunately, when left to our very own choices, many parents fail miserably when it comes to nutrition. Holding major corporations responsible for their role in preventing childhood obesity (obesity being the leading cause of disease in the U.S.), does not seem out of reach. The government regulates CO2 emissions to protect us and the environment from toxins, and high fat/low nutrient foods are toxic too. In my opinion... Thanks for your comment.
