History of Home Part V: Tiny Room in House with BIG things

The house on Fairfield
The summer after living in the sorority house I studied and traveled in Europe and then moved into a tiny room inside a house that my friend Yvonne owned. She was studying abroad so was not living there, but I shared the house with four other girls I had never met before. Since I was there in the summer I was able to move in before they came back from vacation. I was paying $300 to live in the front office just off the living room. It fit my double bed (see HoH Part III) which I lifted on cinder blocks to make storage space underneath and a narrow wooden nightstand. The girl Courtney who lived there before had made it look cozy so I figured it was livable. I painted the walls a nice grey/purple color and bought a springy comforter that was a mint colored floral print. It was really cute and it was my little sanctuary.

The first night I actually slept there I woke up in the middle of the night to a bunch of laughing girls coming home. The next morning I went out to meet them and they were really nice. Really different from me, but nice. One of them had a black lab named Rufus who would barge through my doorway and slobber a bunch. He was great. Anyway 2 of the girls had peed their bed the night before. They also had perfectly perfect fake boobs that they let me touch. They could both stand on their hands and walk around on them. They listened to rap and went out a lot in fancy clothes. Meanwhile I was in my Chaco, casi lesbian hair and makeup, and idealistic liberal phase. Oddly enough they started calling me Crazy Katy.

At first it was a little awkward but I now look back on that year and a half as one of the best living situations yet. I had so much fun! It was the epitome of the girl experience, with those skinny cigarettes and gossip magazines. They were all really into clothes and working out and going out to drink shots on 6th street. It's hard not to have fun with that.  They are all really hilarious, speak their mind and are really smart. Danielle was studying anatomy and kinesiology,  Chelsea was graduating early to go to grad school for cognitive psychology to study the mental disorder that was plaguing her brother, Desiree was studying early childhood education and was a student teacher,  Courtney (my favorite tennis partner) was studying chemical engineering and spent the next summer managing the production of those little dishwashing packets at Procter & Gamble, and Brichelle was one of the top fashion designers in the school. She even made her own wedding dress.

Sadly I don't really keep in touch with these girls. I'm terrible at keeping in touch. But they were great and I thank them for spending my 21st birthday with me at Spiderhouse. We ordered sangria and played scrabble. Eventually we were kicked out and went back to the house and danced on the table.

Desiree and me out on the town ya'll

These people are happy ones who don't take life too seriously and know how to have fun.
